Knee Resurfacing
Where appropriate, your surgeon will offer you a procedure to replace the damaged parts of the knee with anatomically shaped components on the femur and tibia and an ultra-durable polymer component between them to act as a shock absorber. The patella (knee-cap) will sometimes be “resurfaced” in order to alleviate pain or improve function.
In cases where the articular cartilage is worn but there is no major deformity or ligament damage, it may be appropriate to “resurface” the worn area. This involves a small incision through which the femur and tibia are prepared and the components are implanted. This relatively minor procedure should allow you to go home sooner.
